KAMPALA, Uganda — City businessman Hamis Kiggundu, known as Ham, has launched a large-scale cleanup of the Nakivubo drainage channel’s downstream section, the first step in a long-awaited redevelopment project. The operation is preparing the site for construction, which is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

Heavy machinery, trucks and crews were deployed to clear waste, debris and sediment from parts of the channel, which is known for flooding and poor sanitation. The cleanup signals the start of a major project to modernize the Nakivubo Channel and its surrounding areas.

Kiggundu, who also led the redevelopment of the Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, has pledged to upgrade the entire drainage system. The plan includes integrating commercial infrastructure to promote urban renewal, improve flood control and enhance sanitation in downtown Kampala.

“This is not just about cleaning; it’s about preparing the foundation for lasting development,” Kiggundu said at the site. “We are committed to working with relevant authorities to ensure that this project benefits the people and the city.”

The upcoming construction will involve covering and modernizing the channel, creating service lanes and installing water filtration chambers. There is also a possibility of developing commercial spaces above the infrastructure. The project is designed to restore functionality and improve the appearance of one of Kampala’s most important drainage arteries.
