In a significant move to champion female employment and leadership, BrighterMonday Uganda, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, today hosted the “Women In Work” event in Mbarara.
This pivotal gathering brought together 211 ambitious participants, majority women, providing a platform to address and overcome the systemic barriers hindering their professional growth.
The event marked a key step in the ongoing youth empowerment initiative, focusing on skill development, networking, and celebrating women-led businesses. The day’s agenda centered around a dynamic panel discussion titled, “Overcoming Barriers to Female Employment and Leadership.”
The session convened a diverse assembly of experts and industry leaders who shared actionable insights and practical strategies.
The conversation explored critical themes, from navigating the professional landscape and building self-confidence to balancing career demands with personal aspirations, all with the aim of equipping women with the tools to thrive in the modern workplace. The panel specifically discussed the barriers that hold back female employment and leadership and the solutions to those challenges.
The event was graced by Mbarara Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebez, who delivered a powerful keynote address.
Mayor Kakyebez encouraged the women in attendance to actively pursue skills training and seize job opportunities. He underscored a critical message of gender inclusivity, stating, “We are missing a lot of men in the room,” and emphasizing that men need to advocate more for women by being present in these spaces. His remarks highlighted the shared responsibility of fostering an environment where women can flourish professionally. Beyond the insightful discussions, the event featured a vibrant marketplace where 15 women entrepreneurs showcased their businesses.
This display not only provided a platform for these businesses to gain visibility but also served as a source of inspiration for other attendees, demonstrating what is possible with determination and support. The marketplace reinforced the event’s core message of celebrating and uplifting women’s economic contributions.
The “Women In Work” event in Mbarara is a testament to the BrighterMonday Uganda and Mastercard Foundation partnership’s dedication to creating pathways for dignified and fulfilling employment. The insights shared and the connections forged at this gathering directly contribute to developing a more skilled and equitably employed workforce, a core value of both organizations.
