NUP’s Rubongoya Vows to End “Muslim Dominance” in Kampala Leadership, Promises Better Service Delivery

Date:

David Rubongoya, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer aspiring for the Kampala Central parliamentary seat, has declared his mission to save the city from what he describes as decades of poor leadership under Muslim representatives.

Speaking on a local radio station on Monday, July 28, 2025, Rubongoya accused incumbent leaders, including Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and MP Muhammad Nsereko, of incompetence and mediocrity, blaming them for Kampala’s persistent service delivery failures.

Rubongoya stated that he knows Kampala residents tend to favour Muslims when it comes to voting but called on voters to give him a chance to show them that a Christian can serve them better without discrimination.

“For years, Kampala voters have entrusted Muslim leaders with their votes, but what have they received in return? Broken roads, poor sanitation, and failed promises. It’s time for change. As a Christian, I will not discriminate, but I will ensure efficient service delivery for all,” he said.

Rubongoya emphasised that his party, NUP, is already taking steps to shift the city’s leadership dynamics, pointing to the fronting of Ronald Balimwezo, a Christian, as Kampala’s mayor. He vowed that together, they would end what he termed “Muslim dominance” in the city’s governance.

“The good news is that NUP has brought a Christian mayor, Balimwezo. With me in Parliament and him in City Hall, we will work as a team to deliver what Kampala truly deserves,” he added.

The NUP Secretary General also revealed that his party is collaborating with the Rubaga Catholic Church to mobilise Christian voters, aiming to secure key leadership positions in the capital.

The Catholic Church has been a strong ally of NUP, playing a pivotal role in the party’s 2021 electoral success in the Buganda region.
