The National Unity Platform (NUP) today started the vgerifcation exercise to verify academic and other qualifications for aspirants at local government. These include aspirants at LC III and LCV.
The election management committee will verify the aspirants in phases and today they handled Makindye-Ssabagabo and Kira Municipality. The process involves looking at the academic documents, gauging their confidence and grasp of the Emglish language.
More than 200 aspirants were set to be verified.
Some of the aspirants who turned up are: Julius Mutebi, the Kira Municipality mayor, Ahmada Sekyanzi who is vying chairperson of Ndejje Division, Princess Winfred Ndagire for woman councillor in Kira B, and Salma Nakayiwa for woman councillor in Bweyogerere Division.
Nakayiwa, who aims to replace incumbent Betty Beth Namuddu pledged to improve living standards for women and children, boost economic growth in areas like Namanve Industrial Park and Namboole Stadium, and prioritize new projects such as Bukasa Port, the Standard Gauge Railway, and the Jinja Express Highway.
Sarah Nakato, aspiring for mayor of Masajja Division, leveraged her experience in public administration and nursing to promise improvements in healthcare and job creation for her constituents.
Dr Shafik Ssonko running for mayor of Ndejje Division, committed to building on existing developments by enhancing road networks, equipping health centers with medical supplies, and improving schools.
Mutebi, the incumbent mayor of Kira Municipality, emphasized his commitment to addressing neglected service delivery issues, including poor road infrastructure, limited access to clean water, and inadequate welfare for municipal workers.
“We are participating in our party’s verification exercise. If granted the party mandate, we will tackle the poor service delivery that the NRM government has ignored for 40 years, failing to address the concerns of our people,” Mutebi said.
Pavin Nakanjako Mirembe, a recent Archaeology graduate from Makerere University and candidate for councillor in Ndejje C ward, pledged to mobilize youth support for NUP and advocate for better service delivery programs.
Other candidates, including Halima Nakazibwe and Dorothy Nakanwagi for Ndejje A, Nabwama Sarah for Seguku ward, and Herbert Mukasa, collectively condemned the NRM government for inadequate school facilities, poor road conditions, insecurity, wetland mismanagement, drug abuse, and high unemployment rates among youths and women.
