NRM’s Shamim Nanfuma disputes her loss in Kampala

Date:

On July 17, 2025, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) held its parliamentary primaries to select its flag bearer for the Kampala Woman MP seat in the 2026 general elections.

The race was fierce, with candidates Amina Lukanga Nanziri, Shamim Nanfuma, Sofia Safina Kenyangi, and Namuli Joweria Zake vying for the position. What followed was a storm of protests, allegations of corruption, and demands for justice that exposed deep flaws in the process.

The NRM Electoral Commission declared Amina Lukanga the winner with 54,488 votes, followed by Shamim Nanfuma with 45,758, Sofia Safina Kenyangi with 15,380, and Namuli Joweria Zake with 6,197.

But Nanfuma’s supporters have rejected the results, claiming she had won in four of Kampala’s five divisions. They accused the commission of tampering with the vote to favor Lukanga.

Angry supporters gathered outside the NRM Electoral Commission offices on July 18, 2025, chanting for transparency.

“We are here to seek answers why the victory of our candidate Shamim Nanfuma was not declared yet she had won the recent woman mp primaries in Kampala district ,this is not fair what was declared was not correct and we can not accept that,” Dennis Mutebi, one of her supporters told Bbeg Media.

Mutebi called the officials corrupt, insisting Nanfuma’s victories in Kawempe, Makindye, and two other divisions were undeniable.

Nansubuga Ramula from Mulago II claimed Nanfuma secured over 1,000 votes at her polling station compared to Lukanga’s 25, but the results were changed behind closed doors. Kizito Brian from Bwaise I pointed to Nakasero, where Nanfuma allegedly received zero votes despite only one voter being present, blaming a registrar named Kato for malpractice.

Taibu Suuna from Lubaga dismissed Lukanga’s reported 40,000 votes as impossible, accusing commission head Dr. Tanga Odoi of undermining the party.

Nanfuma herself questioned how she could have zero votes in Kampala Central when she led in most divisions.

“This is a clear attempt to rig the results,” she said, demanding verification with original polling data.

Early tallies in Makindye showed a tight race—Lukanga with 10,733 votes and Nanfuma with 10,504—but the final count tipped heavily in Lukanga’s favour, deepening suspicions of manipulation.

Delays in releasing official results only heightened tensions, sparking clashes between Lukanga and Nanfuma supporters outside the commission’s offices.

The commission has set up a tribunal to handle complaints and has so far received several petitions.
