NRM urges CEC candidates to avoid misconduct ahead of delegates’ conference

Date:

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) leadership has issued a stern warning to candidates vying for positions on the Central Executive Committee (CEC) to refrain from misconduct and divisive behaviour as the party prepares for its delegates’ conference.

The directive comes after escalating tensions among candidates, marked by public exchanges of “bitter words” on social media and mainstream media.

In a first-of-its-kind meeting held today at the NRM electoral commission headquarters , the party brought together all CEC candidates and outgoing members to address internal wrangles and chart a path toward unity.

NRM Secretary-General Richard Todwong expressed disappointment over the conduct of some candidates, urging them to campaign responsibly and cease using derogatory language against one another.

“I am disappointed that members of the same house can reach to that extent, and we are here kindly asking you for this tendency to stop because it will kill our party,” Todwong stated.

Todwong also cautioned candidates against engaging in electoral malpractices, specifically highlighting the issue of voter bribery.

“I know most of you are rich and have the capacity to compromise people but this is a bad practice,” he warned, emphasizing the need for a fair and transparent electoral process.

Moses Kigongo, the First Vice Chairman of the NRM, echoed Todwong’s sentiments, stressing the party’s long history and its commitment to maintaining unity.

“We have come a long way with this party, and as a party, we shall not tolerate people who are trying to put this party down. People should respect each other while campaigning,” Kigongo said.

The NRM has reaffirmed that the CEC elections will follow the party’s established method of voting by lining up behind candidates, a process it insists ensures transparency. The leadership assured all candidates of impartial treatment and a level playing field during the elections.

The meeting follows earlier concerns raised by the NRM Electoral Commission, which cautioned candidates against using abusive language and character assassination during campaigns.

With over 200 candidates competing for various CEC positions, the party is keen to maintain discipline and unity ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The NRM leadership’s call for restraint comes amid broader challenges within the party, including allegations of electoral irregularities in recent primaries and growing discontent among grassroots members.

The outcome of the delegates’ conference is expected to shape the party’s direction as it navigates internal reforms and prepares for the national elections.
