The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially begun its Local Council V (LCV) primary elections today, Thursday July, 24, 2025, marking a key step in selecting flag bearers for the upcoming national elections. The voting process is taking place across the country, with party leaders calling for calm, unity, and transparency.
The NRM Secretariat, in a statement issued recently to the media ahead of the elections, reminded all members and candidates to uphold party values of peace, discipline, and respect for democratic processes.
“We urge all participants to avoid violence or provocative behavior. These elections are meant to reflect the strength and unity of our party,” Richard Todwong, the NRM Secretary General said in the statement.
Polling stations opened early in the morning, and voting has been reported to be generally peaceful in most areas. However, the party’s Electoral Commission remains alert to ensure fairness and respond swiftly to any irregularities.
Candidates in various districts have been campaigning for weeks, seeking to win the confidence of NRM delegates and voters. Positions being contested include district chairpersons and other key leadership roles under the LCV structure.
Senior party leaders have emphasized that the outcome of the elections must be respected by all candidates, urging losers to support the winners in the spirit of building a stronger NRM ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“We are not enemies. After today, we remain members of the same party and must work together to serve our people,” He added.
Observers from within the party and civil society have been deployed to monitor the exercise and ensure it adheres to democratic standards.
The NRM leadership has also warned against vote rigging, bribery, and intimidation, reminding all members that disciplinary action will be taken against anyone found violating party rules.
The results of the elections are expected to be announced by the NRM Electoral Commission once the counting is complete and verified.
Today’s LCV primaries are a significant milestone in the NRM’s preparations for the 2026 elections, with successful candidates set to play a major role in shaping local governance across Uganda.
