The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has distanced itself from individuals involved in a series of violent assaults and robberies that occurred in Kampala on June 28, during President Museveni’s journey to Kyadondo for his nomination.
The attacks, carried out in broad daylight near the National Theatre and UBC roundabout, involved men wearing yellow T-shirts—associated with the NRM—who targeted motorists, pedestrians, and bystanders. Videos of the incidents, widely circulated on social media, sparked public outrage, especially after some victims were seen being robbed and beaten, including women.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, speaking from Omoro District, condemned the violence and apologized to the victims. He suggested that individuals from rival political groups may have impersonated NRM supporters to discredit the party. Todwong emphasized that such behavior does not reflect the NRM’s values and pledged full cooperation with ongoing investigations.
Kampala Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of at least 21 suspects through CCTV footage. The suspects are being held at various police stations, and several victims have given statements as authorities prepare to pursue legal action. One suspect, injured while fleeing, is receiving medical care.
Police continue to analyze surveillance footage to identify additional perpetrators and urged more victims to come forward. Investigations are ongoing amid increasing calls for accountability and order during political events.
