Yasin Omar, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) mayoral flagbearer for Makindye Division, has requested a private meeting with President Museveni to address internal issues within the party.
Speaking to Bbeg Media at Tank Hill, Muyenga in Kampala, Omar said he needs just 10 minutes with Museveni to discuss what is happening within the party.
“These issues cannot be aired in the public domain,” Omar stated firmly.
Omar emphasized that the meeting would be critical and will allow senior NRM cadres in Makindye to chart a way forward for the party, which has faced accusations of some members operating outside the NRM constitution.
As the outgoing Lord Councillor for Muyenga and Bukasa at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Omar also criticized the growing commercialization of elections by certain party leaders, arguing that it undermines the democratic principles.
Omar called for immediate amendments to the NRM constitution to address this issue. Additionally, he raised concerns about the continuous re-election of the party’s Secretary General and other senior officials, stating that it hampers accountability.
Omar expressed hope that Museveni would respond promptly to their request, ideally before the upcoming elections. Omar is set to compete against candidates from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), National Unity Platform (NUP), Democratic Party (DP), Justice Forum (JEEMA), and other parties for the mayoral seat currently held by Ali Mulyanyama.
Mulyanyama, who is not seeking re-election as mayor, is instead running for the Makindye West MP seat to challenge the incumbent, Allan Ssewanyana of the NUP.
Omar highlighted several challenges facing Makindye Division, including poor drainage, overcrowding due to slums in Namuwongo, high crime rates, teenage pregnancies, high school dropout rates, and youth unemployment leading to drug abuse
