Hon. Hadji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC Secretary-General presided over the reading of the first North Eastern Region budget on January 18, 2025, at a corporate luncheon held in Soroti City.
Hadji Muluubya explained that the proposed budget aligned with the theme of the UMSC national budget for the 2025/2026 financial year and was consistent with the UMSC strategic plan. He urged corporates to direct their efforts toward supporting the UMSC in general, and the North Eastern Region specifically. He also announced that the Mufti of Uganda would soon make a working visit to the districts of Teso and Kumi.
Dr. Jamil Sserwanga, Vice Rector of Academic Affairs at the Islamic University in Uganda, delivered the keynote address on behalf of Rector Prof. Ismail Ssimbwa Gyagenda. Dr. Sserwanga elaborated on the day’s theme and emphasized the role of corporates in community well-being, highlighting the responsibility of Muslims to harness the value of ICT while avoiding its potential dangers.
The luncheon attracted a diverse group of participants from Teso, Karamoja, and the surrounding Eastern Muslim region. Among the attendees were District Kadhis, their deputies, retired District Kadhis, Members of the General Assembly, District Executive Committee members, county sheikhs, and Muslim corporates.
The North Eastern Regional Assistant to the Mufti, Sheikh Abubakar Umar Obilan, presented an ambitious budget of over 38 billion Shillings, with substantial allocations for social services and education.
On January 19, 2025, the Secretary-General took time to resolve a dispute between the Teso Muslim District Council and the mosque committee regarding the management of lock-ups at Soroti Main Mosque. He also toured several Muslim properties, including the lock-ups, the Tauba House construction site at Okurut Close, and the Muslim House in Soroti City.
Later, accompanied by Sheikh Obilan, the Secretary-General toured Muslim District properties in Kumi, including schools, lock-ups under construction, the disputed prime mosque land near Kumi Central Market, and the vacant prime land housing only district offices. He also inspected the ongoing construction of the proposed Regional Centre of Excellence on UMSC land in Kanyum Muslim County and Agaitha Modern Schools for Muslims.
