Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has publicly expressed admiration for former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, vowing to protect and collaborate with him in the future.
In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Gen. Muhoozi stated, “Mpuuga is someone I respect and want to work with. No one will touch him. I look forward to working with him.”

His remarks follow the recent launch of the Democratic Front, a new political initiative by Mpuuga, which he described as a more principled and organized alternative to existing opposition groups.
This isn’t the first time Gen. Muhoozi has praised Mpuuga. In December 2024, he referred to the Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator as “presidential material” and a “remarkable politician,” prompting speculation about the general’s political leanings and possible future ambitions.
The timing of Muhoozi’s statement is noteworthy, as it comes amid escalating tensions between Mpuuga and National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. The former allies have become increasingly estranged following Mpuuga’s ouster as NUP deputy president for the Buganda region.
While Bobi Wine continues to lead a vibrant and youthful opposition movement, Mpuuga’s breakaway platform introduces new complexity and potential division within the opposition ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Although Gen. Muhoozi officially remains apolitical in his military role, his growing presence in political conversations and overt support for certain individuals have fueled speculation about his future in civilian leadership.
Whether his relationship with Mpuuga will translate into a formal political alliance remains to be seen, but the general’s declaration—“No “one will touch ”him”—carries significant weight, signaling both endorsement and protection from the nation’s top military official.
