Claire Ollama, a registrar at the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), announced during a Monday press briefing today that renewed national ID cards are now ready for collection.
“Last week, we began production and successfully printed 100,000 ID cards, which have been distributed across the country,” the multi-lingual Ollama stated.
“This marks significant progress in delivering on our objectives.”
She urged the public to remain patient, as notifications specifying collection points will be sent via SMS. “Please wait for a message indicating where to pick up your national ID,” she advised.
The NIRA executive director Rosemary Kisembo, said only 27.4 million Ugandans are currently registered out of a population of 45.9 million, as reported in last year’s census.
The first batch of national IDs, issued between 2014 and 2015, expired in 2024 and 2025 after a 10-year validity period. The government recently granted a one-year extension for these expirations. Approximately 15.8 million IDs are due to expire by August 2025.
The ongoing mass registration exercise aims to renew these IDs while incorporating enhanced security features for improved identification.
