The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced that renewed national identity cards for applicants are now ready for collection.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, NIRA registrar Claire Ollama revealed that the production process began last week, with 100,000 cards already printed and distributed across various regions. She emphasized that the national ID renewal project is beginning to show tangible results.

Ollama urged the public to remain patient as more people will be notified via SMS when and where to collect their IDs. “Once you receive a message on your phone, it will indicate the designated collection center,” she explained.
Uganda’s initial batch of national IDs was issued between 2014 and 2015, and the 10-year validity period expired between 2024 and 2025. The government has since extended the validity for one more year to allow for renewal.
Over 15.8 million national IDs are set to expire by August 2025. The ongoing mass registration aims not only to renew these IDs but also to enhance them with upgraded security features to improve identification efficiency.
NIRA Executive Director Rosemary Kisembo previously noted that only 27.4 million Ugandans are currently registered in the national system—far fewer than the 45.9 million population recorded in last year’s census.
