New imaging centre in Wandegeya pledges to address STDs, infertility

Date:

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are the leading cause of infertility in women, Aidah Nassolo, the lead consultant at Wandegeya Imaging Centre in Uganda has told Bbeg Media.

She said STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may cause tubal factor infertility (TFI) by scarring or blocking the fallopian tubes, preventing conception.

According to global health data, approximately 1 in 6 people experience infertility worldwide, with higher rates among women affected by STDs due to complications like PID.

Nassolo’s remarks during the grand opening of Wandegeya Imaging Centre emphasize the importance of early screening and treatment for STDs and urinary tract infections to prevent infertility.

“We are proud to celebrate our grand opening of our imaging centre and we are ready to serve the public. Our centre has been stocked with ultra modern equipment to see Ugandans get better healthcare,” Nassolo said.

Nassolo, a trained radiographer from Mengo Hospital, has built a reputation for her expertise in reproductive health and commitment to affordable, high-quality care.

Her former boss, Mulwana Kizito, praised her dedication and urged the government to promote public medical insurance to improve access to imaging services.

The centre is licensed by the Ministry of Health and the Allied Health Professionals Council and registered with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, ensuring it meets regulatory standards.

Nassolo’s said the focus should be on early detection because untreated STDs can lead to chronic complications, including infertility.
