In a thrilling Match Day 6 fixture of the MTN Kabode Tooro Kingdom Masaza Cup, debutants Mwenge North pulled off a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Bunyangabu County at a packed Kibiito Playground on Sunday. The result not only handed Mwenge North a dream start to their tournament campaign but also sealed Bunyangabu’s early exit from the competition for the second year running.
The contest got off to a fiery start, with Bunyangabu drawing first blood in the 6th minute after forward Joshua Nyando converted a penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after Mwenge North goalkeeper Amon Edie fouled Nyando in the box.
Mwenge North, however, responded with intent. Just nine minutes later, Mukiisa Moses rose highest to head home a perfectly placed cross from Bahati William, drawing the visitors level at 1-1. The hosts regained the lead in first-half stoppage time, thanks to a long-range strike from midfielder Brian Bwambale that sent the home crowd into raptures and gave Bunyangabu a 2-1 edge heading into the break.
But the second half belonged entirely to Mwenge North — and to their captain, Muhumuza Moses.
In the 58th minute, Mwenge were awarded a penalty after Joseph Alituha was judged to have handled the ball inside the area. Muhumuza calmly stepped up and slotted it home to equalize once again. The captain wasn’t done yet. Just seven minutes later, he completed the comeback with a close-range header that slipped past Bunyangabu goalkeeper Kenneth Nanyuba, sealing a 3-2 lead that Mwenge North would not surrender.
Muhumuza, who was later named Man of the Match, expressed pride in his side’s resilience.
“Bunyangabu is a very tough team and they played a very good game because they knew any loss would send them out,” Muhumuza said after the match. “But I’m happy that we contained the pressure. Even after conceding an early penalty, we never lost focus.”
For his standout performance — including a brace that inspired the comeback — Muhumuza Moses was awarded a brand-new Kabode smartphone courtesy of MTN Uganda.
The result leaves Mwenge North top of Group C with three points, while Bunyangabu finishes bottom with just one point from two matches, officially crashing out of the 2025 edition. They become the second team to be eliminated from the tournament after Kibale County.
