Museveni’s Brother Vows to Unseat Ssekikubo in Lwemiyaga MP Race

Date:

A heated political contest is unfolding in Lwemiyaga County, where Michael Nuwagira, widely known as Toyota and a brother to President Museveni, has launched a vigorous campaign to unseat long-serving MP Theodore Ssekikubo in the forthcoming general elections.

Speaking during the campaign kickoff for Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Rwashande—an NRM flag bearer hopeful—Nuwagira accused Ssekikubo of underperformance despite having served in Parliament for 25 years. He urged residents to back Rwashande, claiming he would better address local needs like health services, schools, and electricity.

Rwashande echoed these sentiments, pledging to prioritize essential services and urging residents to maintain peace during campaigns, especially in an area historically plagued by electoral violence. Ssekikubo, a fellow NRM member, has long criticized military interference in local politics—a concern echoed by residents who questioned the presence of armed soldiers accompanying Rwashande.

Rwashande defended the security deployment, saying it was to maintain peace and not for personal protection. He emphasized that more soldiers would be requested to ensure calm during the primaries.

As the race intensifies, many residents voiced frustrations over decades of poor service delivery despite their support for the ruling party. They called for peaceful elections and expressed hope that this election cycle would not be marred by violence, prompting the NRM to allow separate campaign rallies in the volatile constituency as a preventive measure.
