Museveni’s brother, Nzeire, seeks to oust Baryomunsi as NRM vice chair

Date:

Sedrack Nzeire Kaguta, the younger brother of President Museveni, has officially declared his candidacy for the position of Vice Chairperson for the Western Region on the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC).

Nzeire, who has served as the NRM chairperson for Kiruhura for three consecutive terms, announced his intentions after picking up expression of interest forms at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kyadondo, Kampala.

In his announcement, Nzeire emphasized his commitment to uniting NRM members and Ugandans at large.

“I want to promote unity within the NRM and among Ugandans. I will work to address issues of arrogance and impunity, which are rampant among some leaders within the party, ensuring that everyone is respected,” he said.

He highlighted his extensive experience in politics and leadership, positioning himself as a candidate capable of revitalizing the CEC role.

Nzeire said he aims to make the CEC position more dynamic by prioritizing inclusivity and ensuring that members’ ideas are heard.

He has promised to convene regular meetings to provide a platform for NRM members to express their views and concerns, fostering the party’s growth.

He criticized the incumbent vice chairperson for the Western Region, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, who also serves as the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, for failing to hold such meetings.

Nzeire said: “The current leadership has not convened sufficient meetings to allow members to voice their concerns, which is critical for the party’s progress.”

Reflecting on his tenure as Kiruhura NRM chairperson, Nzeire claimed a strong track record, noting that he delivered a 99.8% vote share for the NRM in the district during past elections.

He expressed his ambition to replicate this success at the regional level, rallying NRM members to support his candidacy.

Other candidates who have confirmed their expression of interest for CEC positions include Sam Engola for the Northern Region, Michael Mawanda for Western Region, and Dan Kidega for the Northern Region.

The nomination process for CEC positions, which began on June 26, 2025, is set to close on July 1, 2025, with formal nominations scheduled for July 4, 2025. The NRM primaries are slated for July 16, 2025.
