MP Ssebamala criticizes opposition for lack of unity ahead of 2026 elections

Richard Ssebamala, the MP for Bukoto Central, has criticized opposition parties for their failure to unite in their efforts to challenge President Museveni in 2026.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) at their offices in Kawempe, Ssebamala emphasized the need for trust and unity among opposition parties if they want to unseat NRM.

“As we approach the 2026 elections, opposition parties remain too weak to defeat President Museveni because of a lack of trust among leaders,” Ssebamala said.

“We must be united by truth and justice—cardinal principles that can propel us to power.”

Ssebamala, who rose from humble beginnings as a taxi conductor to a prominent legislator, urged opposition parties to move beyond their comfort zones and inspire Ugandans with a genuine cause.

He emphasized the need for sacrifice to improve service delivery, including better schools, access to quality healthcare, and reduced spending on non-priority sectors. He stressed that the struggle for change goes beyond posters and slogans, calling for greater accountability to ensure taxpayers’ money translates into tangible services.

Reflecting on his recent bid for the Democratic Party (DP) presidency, which he lost to Norbert Mao, Ssebamala accused fellow legislators of betraying their constituents by neglecting parliamentary debates on budget allocations in favor of personal interests.

He urged voters to elect leaders committed to improving service delivery.

Addressing voter apathy and limited access to information, Ssebamala criticized parliament and political parties for failing to build democratic engagement despite receiving public funding.

He accused leaders of prioritizing self-enrichment over accountability, leaving citizens uninformed about national budget allocations and their rights.

Regarding his future political plans, Ssebamala asked supporters for one month to decide whether to seek re-election for his parliamentary seat or pursue a broader role. He expressed confidence in his record.

“I have done all I could to represent my constituents, and I believe this is enough to improve the conditions of other Ugandans,” he said.

Through initiatives like the Ssebamala Foundation and the Ssebamala Cup, a community football tournament, he said has empowered local entrepreneurs and united youth in Bukoto Central, offering a model for grassroots development.

Ssebamala’s remarks come amid tensions within the DP following the Mbarara delegates’ conference, where he and fellow MP Michael Lulume Bayiga accused Norbert Mao of rigging the party’s presidential election. Lulume has since joined the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
