A family in Mubende District is seeking justice after a violent political altercation left Rogers Gumisiriza, a father of four, with gunshot wounds to both legs, raising fears that he may never walk again.
The incident occurred on July 7 during a heated standoff between rival National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary campaign teams in Nabingoola Sub-county, Kassambya Constituency. Gumisiriza, who had been hired to transport rally attendees, says he was unintentionally caught in the fracas and was allegedly shot by area MP David Kabanda while trying to flee the scene.

Eyewitnesses confirmed the chaos that erupted between convoys, resulting in the burning of two vehicles and a motorcycle. Gumisiriza is currently hospitalized and bedridden at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, unable to provide for his children or elderly mother.
His relatives say the family is overwhelmed. His brother has called for a full police investigation, questioning how a firearm was used in a political rally, while their mother fears for the long-term consequences on their already struggling household.
MP Kabanda has denied the shooting but expressed openness to police scrutiny, stating he is willing to face the law and be disqualified from the race if found responsible. The NRM Electoral Commission has also condemned the violence and warned candidates involved in incitement or brutality could face suspension.
Authorities, including the Resident District Commissioner, confirmed that several suspects have been arrested and investigations are ongoing. The incident adds to growing concerns about increasing political violence within NRM primaries ahead of Uganda’s 2026 elections.
