MP Balimwezo’s Kneeling Sparks shock: Is Bobi Wine Sacrificing Democracy for Cult Loyalty

Date:

Ugandans are raising alarm over what they now see as a disturbing shift inside the National Unity Platform (NUP), with many accusing its leader, Bobi Wine, of turning the party into a cult.

The latest incident that shocked the public was when Nakawa West Member of Parliament (MP) Ronald Balimwezo was seen kneeling before Bobi Wine at a public event. The act, caught on camera, went viral online and triggered anger and confusion.

“Why would a Member of Parliament kneel before another politician? That’s not respect, its worship. If MPs are kneeling, should the rest of us crawl?” one outraged Ugandan posted on social media.

This moment has sparked renewed fears that NUP is no longer about democracy or fighting for the people but is now all about serving one man Bobi Wine.

Former NUP insider Bigirwa Moses openly warned the country: “NUP has abandoned its democratic values. It’s now all about loyalty to Bobi Wine. If we don’t stop this, Uganda will face a serious political crisis.”

Bigirwa says that people who dare question Bobi Wine’s decisions are pushed out of the party, while those who kneel literally and politically are given favors, positions, and power.

Bobi Wine’s recent unchallenged re-election as NUP president has only added to the suspicions. There was no competition, no debate, and no transparency.

“Is this democracy or dictatorship in disguise?” one analyst asked.

Critics are also pointing fingers at the way Bobi Wine handpicks his closest allies for big roles like giving support to his long-time friend Nubian Li (Bukenya Ali) for mayor of Nakawa, and David Lewis Rubongoya for Kampala Central MP based on loyalty, not ability.

The most painful part, critics say, is that NUP was created as a party to fight for the poor, especially people in the ghettos. But today, it’s those same people who feel ignored, while a small group around Bobi Wine enjoy all the attention and benefits.

What started as a movement of hope is now being called a dangerous one-man show. If you question Bobi Wine, you’re seen as a traitor.

With the 2026 elections nearing, many are now asking: Has NUP become the very thing it promised to fight an undemocratic club controlled by one powerful figure?

Only time will tell whether Ugandans will rise and demand real leadership or continue to kneel before the man they once trusted to speak for them.
