Media personality Douglas Lwanga and singer Bebe Cool have come out to defend Pretty Nicole after acquiring a TV job.
Last week, Pretty Nicole was appointed as one of the BABA TV hosts and commenced her duties as the Band show host.
Her appointment, however, was met with divergent reactions from social media users, with many questioning her academic qualifications to earn the TV job.
Responding to the social media criticism, Next Media’s entertainment journalist Douglas Lwanga was quick to air his opinion, stressing that lately, skills outweigh qualifications in the journalism industry.
Lwanga emphasized that media outlets have shifted their focus from the degree one holds to how a personality can deliver and attract viewership.
Hey Kirya Ug , you raise a very pertinent issue for journalism students. The sad reality is that the media space like most jobs today is more about “what can you do” than “what did you study.” It’s skills versus qualifications. With the rise of technology and social media, the big question has shifted to “How many eyeballs do you bring to the media channel?” not “What degree do you hold?” That’s the new reality.
In the same vein, Gagamel boss Bebe Cool expressed his disappointment in those castigating Baba TV for hiring Pretty Nicole. He made it known that initially, Nicole was unemployed, prompting her to venture into uncouth directions.
Bebe noted that Ugandans ought to be grateful that Pretty Nicole is now employed, and her new career path will change her life.
