Date:

The Ministry of Works and Transport in coordination with Uganda Police’s Directorate of Traffic, have resolved to suspend YY Bus operations for 15 days following a series of serious accidents linked to reckless driving.

The suspension comes at the heels of the two serious roads crashes, including one in which three passengers were killed and the bus caught fire along the Mukono-Katosi- Jinja highway.

“These two crashes point to recklessness by your drivers on the road,” the Minister wrote in the letter addressed to the managing director of YY coaches.

Police confirmed that three people died on spot and blamed the crash on the driver who remains on the run.

A second YY bus number UAX 852F also crashed at Ayango on the Pakwacha-Arua highway while heading to Yumbe. According to police, the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle before losing control resulting into a serious accident.

The minister said the company’s entire fleet will be parked from 7pm on Tuesday, May 13 to allow investigation into the two accidents.

During this Suspension, authorities will among other things inspect driver badges and permits, review driver schedules and training history.

The Ministry will also investigate the use of aged, possibly underqualified drivers. The Buses’ Operations may resume after a full review.
