Legendary Ugandan singer Maurice Kirya has once again reaffirmed his place in East Africa’s musical landscape with the release of his seventh studio album, This Is Happening, a profoundly personal, creatively daring, and sonically rich body of work.
Known for his unmatched fusion of soul, Afro-fusion, and artistic storytelling, Kirya uses this new album to open up a side of himself fans rarely see, private, delicate, and emotionally exposed, yet delivered with his signature artistic boldness.
The album explores themes ranging from love and longing to self-reflection and parenthood. In “Oluusi Nebowa,” Kirya gives listeners a raw glimpse into his inner thoughts, expressing emotions many shy away from revealing. The song stands out as one of the most vulnerable entries in his catalog.
Another highlight is “Agenda,” a sensual mid-tempo track influenced by South American and Afro-jazz rhythms. Here, Kirya sings longingly to the object of his affection, reminding listeners that even fame cannot fulfill every desire of the heart.
Kirya also lightens the album with urban, feel-good vibes on songs like “Say I Do” and “Be The Same,” where his clean, clever writing offers a refreshing balance to the album’s deeper emotional layers.
A particularly touching moment comes in “On This Side of the Phone,” where Kirya sings to his daughter, capturing the challenges of distance, misunderstanding, and separation that many parents around the world can relate to.
