Matia Lwanga Bwanika, a parliamentary candidate in Busiro South, has promised residents that he will offer consistent and accountable representation if elected in next year’s polls.
Bwanika, who is standing as an independent despite being a long-time member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), told voters in Nsaggu cell, Kajjansi Town Council, that he is a dependable leader who has never abandoned his constituents during his years in public office.
He made the remarks during a door-to-door mobilisation drive, where one voter challenged him to prove that he would remain accessible once elected to Parliament.
“I am a dependable leader. I have always been available to the people I serve. As the Wakiso district chairperson, I was responsible for all eight constituencies, but I was more visible and available than several direct MPs. I assure you that I will always consult you,” Bwanika said.
Bwanika, who has served three terms as Wakiso chairman, said his long experience in local government means he fully understands the challenges facing Busiro South. He cited land grabbing as one of the most urgent issues and pledged to confront those behind it.
“The LCV seat is big and fairly hard to serve better, but with a smaller constituency, I can lobby and deliver more effectively. Send me to Parliament, and I will fight land grabbing because I know the people doing it and I know I can stop them,” he said.
Bwanika also urged residents to vote for NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, in the presidential election, but choose “competent MPs” like him at lower levels to support him.
“On the ballot, tick Kyagulanyi for president, but send him competent people at lower levels because he needs them,” he said.
Although Bwanika is a senior figure in NUP, he chose to run as an independent after falling out with the party leadership over what he described as irregularities in the party’s vetting and flag-bearing processes.
He has previously accused NUP of sidelining experienced leaders in favour of newcomers and argued that standing independently would allow him to remain accountable to voters rather than party interests.
He is seeking to replace Charles Matovu, the incumbent MP.
