Matia Lwanga Bwanika, a candidate for Busiro South, has urged residents to vote for him and, in his words, “save” the constituency from what he described as poor representation under the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Bwanika made the remarks after visiting Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala at his residence in Nsambya. The visit was widely seen as an attempt to seek political blessing from the 99-year-old cardinal ahead of the 2026 elections.
“I have come to pay a courtesy visit to the prince of the Catholic Church in Uganda and to notify him about my new political journey, where I am currently campaigning to represent the people of Busiro South in Parliament,” Bwanika told Bbeg Media.
He said that, as a staunch Catholic and long-time friend of Cardinal Wamala, he felt it was important to inform him of his plans and to receive prayers, blessings and guidance.
Bwanika, the outgoing Wakiso chairperson, told the cardinal that he considered it necessary to contest for the parliamentary seat now that he has completed his three terms at the district.
He said he had improved the livelihoods of residents in Wakiso by investing in education, healthcare services, youth and women’s empowerment, support for the elderly, human rights protection and environmental conservation.
He added that he had lobbied for the construction and rehabilitation of tarmacked roads, supported rural electrification projects, and led campaigns against corruption and land grabbing in the district.
In his response, Cardinal Wamala blessed Bwanika and prayed for his success in the 2026 parliamentary elections. He urged him to prioritise effective representation, strong oversight, and all the responsibilities required of a legislator.
Bwanika joins a growing list of politicians seeking spiritual endorsement from religious leaders as the 2026 general elections draw closer.
