Kabale–A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) at Kabale Municipal Stadium for attempting to bribe his way into the army with one million Uganda shillings.
The suspect, identified as Esau Niwandinda, a resident of Nyakarambi Cell, Birambo Parish in Maziba Sub-county, Kabale District, was apprehended during the ongoing UPDF recruitment exercise for the greater Kabale region.
According to Major Kiconco Tabaro, the Public Information Officer for the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division, Niwandinda was caught red-handed as he inquired about whom to pay in order to bypass the official recruitment procedures and secure a position in the force.
“This is a criminal act and is punishable under Ugandan law,” said Maj Tabaro. “The UPDF strongly condemns any attempts to compromise the integrity of its recruitment process.”
He added that the arrest sends a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated and warned the public against attempting to bribe their way into the army.
Maj Tabaro emphasized that the UPDF remains committed to recruiting based on merit, integrity, and physical competence. He urged all aspiring recruits to respect the laid-out procedures and standards.
“This arrest should serve as a warning and a lesson that only merit and hard work can earn someone a place in this esteemed institution,” he said.
The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
