Makerere University has responded to a Daily Monitor story ran on 8th July, 2025 indicating that it has gone down the International Rankings.
“Makerere University Tumbles down Academic Cliff,” read a Daily Monitor headline indicating that Uganda’s oldest University is now ranked 41st in Africa tying with 31 other Universities in Africa.
According to Daily Monitor, the TIMES Higher Education that ranks Universities worldwide also place Makerere University between 1, 201 to 1200 globally.
However, in a statement released the following day, 9th July, Makerere University clarifies saying despite recent media reports, it remains highly ranked by international agencies.
The University said that according to the latest Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), it is ranked 13th in Africa and 912th globally, maintaining its position as Uganda’s leading university.
It added that EduRank places Makerere 7th in Africa and among the top 5% of universities worldwide, with particular recognition in Health Sciences research.
The University reassured stakeholders, partners, alumni, students, and the public that it continues to excel in teaching, learning, and research, and has regained its international reputation as a leader in collaborative research with significant impact on the Sustainable Development Goals.
