Residents of Zzinga, on Bussi Island in Bussi Sub-county, Wakiso, have appealed to police authorities and leaders to assist the island’s police post in obtaining transportation and to recruit more female officers.
This is because the situation has led to increased lawlessness among women, who are not handled by female officers as required by law.
The residents, led by the chairpersons of nine villages on the island, met with leaders from Wakiso, including Matia Lwanga Bwanika, the district chairperson who is an aspirant for Busiro South for 2026.
They stated that their police post has very few officers, and those available lack even a motorcycle for transportation. This makes it difficult to respond promptly when a resident needs assistance.
Due to this situation, they reported challenges such as cases where someone commits a crime and calls the police, but the police cannot respond because they lack transportation. Even when they want to assist, they are unable to do so.
Bwanika condemned this situation and promised to convene a meeting to address the issues raised, noting that it was disappointing to find such conditions.
When asked about the issue of women offenders, they explained that those who commit offenses are arrested by male officers due to the absence of female officers which is not ideal and requires attention.
They appealed to those responsible for security to improve the conditions at police posts in these areas to effectively combat lawlessness.
Bwanika said the district’s human rights committee has already engaged senior officials on this matter, and work is ongoing. However, he expressed frustration with some government officials who politicize service delivery, which significantly hinders progress and service delivery in the country.
