Latif Ssebagala Slams Bobi Wine over Inaction on Nyanzi’s Extortion of NUP Aspirants

Date:

Former Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebagala has publicly expressed disappointment with National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, for failing to take action against his elder brother, Fred Nyanzi, despite evidence implicating him in the extortion and sexual harassment of members vying to contest under the NUP flag.

The controversy stems from an investigation committee set up earlier this month by Bobi Wine to probe allegations that Nyanzi and other top NUP officials were demanding money and sexual favors from aspiring candidates in exchange for party tickets.

Speaking on a local radio station Monday, July 21, 2025, Ssebagala revealed that the committee found Nyanzi guilty and submitted its findings, with concrete evidence, to the NUP president, but no disciplinary measures have been taken.

“The committee investigated and confirmed that Nyanzi was involved in extortion and sexual harassment of party members seeking NUP tickets. A report was presented to Bobi Wine, but he has deliberately refused to act. This is a betrayal of the trust Ugandans have in NUP as a party of justice and accountability,” Ssebagala said.

Nyanzi added that several victims and party members have reached out to him and threatened to quit NUP if Bobi Wine continues to ignore their grievances. “They come to me frustrated, saying they can’t remain in a party that preaches justice but practices favouritism,” he explained.

He further noted that the discontent cuts across several districts where aspirants allegedly paid bribes for nominations.

Ssebagala also lashed at the hypocrisy in NUP, citing the incident where Bobi Wine swiftly acted against Mathias Mpuuga, the then deputy party president for the Buganda region, over corruption allegations but continues shielding his brother Fred Nyanzi from similar accountability.

“Within a few hours of allegations against Mpuuga, Bobi Wine was on social media condemning him and pushing for his expulsion, but when his own brother is caught red-handed extorting millions from desperate aspirants, we see endless delays and excuses. What’s the difference? Either this is pure favouritism or they’re both benefiting from these dirty deals. Ugandans are watching,” Ssebagala said.

When contacted for a comment, NUP deputy spokesperson Waiswa Mufumbiro said that “NUP is not a government organization to be accountable to every Tom, Dick and Harry”.
