Kyambogo University has expelled Guild President Benjamin Akiso after disciplinary proceedings found him guilty of violating university rules during recent student protests.
According to an official dismissal letter dated July 3, 2025, Akiso was cited for breaching the peace, setting up roadblocks, and defying university authorities. These actions were found to contravene the university’s Students’ Regulations of 2003, revised in 2016.

The Students Affairs and Welfare Committee, which reviewed the case, recommended expulsion. The University Council adopted this recommendation during its 111th meeting held on June 27, 2025, leading to Akiso’s immediate removal in accordance with Regulation 41 of the student code.
Akiso, a final-year Special Needs Education student and a high-profile student leader, had led demonstrations over tuition-related grievances. His dismissal has drawn national attention and criticism, with opposition leaders—such as NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine)—labeling the move politically charged.
Although the university has not released a public statement beyond the dismissal notice, Akiso’s supporters argue that the protests were legitimate expressions of student concerns. They have pledged to contest the expulsion, citing his rights to peaceful assembly and representation.
