A primary school teacher has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for attempting to sexually assault a pupil during a school trip. Godfrey Muwumuza, a former teacher at Kabojja Junior School in Kampala’s upscale Kololo area, admitted to the crime as part of a plea bargain with prosecutors.
Presiding Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi handed down the sentence on June 23, 2025, following the plea deal approved by the court. Muwumuza received four years and six months for the first charge, with a reduction for time already spent in remand, leaving him to serve four years, four months, and 16 days. On the second charge, he was sentenced to three years, reduced to two years, two months, and six days. The sentences will run concurrently, and he has 14 days to appeal.

Originally charged with aggravated homosexuality—a capital offense in Uganda—Muwumuza also faced indecent assault charges. Plea bargaining allowed him to admit guilt in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Prosecutor Joan Keko highlighted aggravating factors, including Muwumuza’s abuse of authority, the victim’s vulnerability (an 11-year-old pupil), the significant age gap (32 years), and the repeated nature of the assaults. The crime occurred during a school trip, witnessed by another student, and caused lasting harm.
In mitigation, Muwumuza’s defense cited his remorse, first-time offender status, guilty plea (saving court time), and his role as the family’s sole provider. When given a chance to speak in court, he remained silent.
Court documents revealed that Muwumuza, during the return trip, acted on a sexual urge by coercing the boy into touching him. When interrupted by another student, he later resumed his advances on the bus. The victim, fearing further abuse, texted his mother, who alerted the police. Muwumuza reportedly confessed during interrogation.
Prosecutor Keko emphasized the victim’s extreme vulnerability—being both a child and a student under the teacher’s care—which Muwumuza exploited.
