Kin Kariisa Resigns From CHAN And AFCON Organising Roles Over Personal Matters

Kin Kariisa, a key member of the Local Organising Committees (LOC) for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, has officially stepped down from both roles, citing personal reasons.

In a resignation letter addressed to the Chairperson of the two Organising Committees, the Next Media Group CEO, stated that his decision takes immediate effect and comes after “careful reflection.”

He explained that the move was necessary to allow him to fully focus on personal matters requiring his attention.

“It has been a true honour to serve alongside a dedicated team working toward two of the most significant events in Uganda’s sporting history,I am proud of the progress we have made in preparing to host the continent and showcasing the best of Ugandan talent and hospitality.”Kariisa wrote.

His resignation comes at a pivotal moment, as Uganda, alongside Tanzania and Kenya, intensifies preparations to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2024 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027 under the East Africa Pamoja bid.

Although stepping away from an official role, Kariisa pledged continued support for Uganda’s hosting ambitions.

He emphasized that, through his leadership at Next Media, he remains committed to championing the tournaments and the broader development of Ugandan sports.

“While I may no longer serve in an official capacity, I remain fully supportive of the Committee’s efforts.Through my role at Next Media, I will continue to advocate for and contribute to the success of both tournaments.”,he said.

Kariisa’s resignation was formally communicated to the Committee Chairperson and copied to the Minister of Education and Sports as well as the ministry’s Permanent Secretary.

His presence in the LOCs was widely viewed as a strategic advantage, particularly in boosting media coverage, public mobilization, and private sector engagement.

His departure is likely to prompt internal discussions within the organising bodies around the reassignment of roles as preparations gain momentum.

The CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 tournaments are expected to bring significant economic, diplomatic, and infrastructural benefits to the host nations. Despite the loss of a prominent figure, sources within the Ministry of Education and Sports have expressed confidence in the Committee’s ability to deliver successful events.

Kariisa concluded his letter with gratitude to the committee and optimism for the future.

“I sincerely thank you and the entire Committee for the opportunity to be part of this important national assignment. I wish you continued success in the work ahead,” he wrote.

The LOCs for both tournaments were unveiled in May 2024 by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni. They include a range of experienced professionals such as:

Rev. Can. Dr. Duncan Mugumya – Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports, MoES

Pius Biribononoha – Deputy Solicitor General, Ministry of Justice & Constitutional Affairs

Jacqueline Basemera – Principal Assistant Secretary, MoES and Secretary to the LOC
