Kikuube District LC V Chairperson Peter Banura has died in a tragic road accident after a taxi reportedly rammed into bystanders.
Banura, who is the son of Matayo Kyaligonza, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident, which has shocked residents and leaders across the region.
The accident occurred in Kikuube District, where a speeding taxi is said to have lost control and ploughed into pedestrians. Several other victims were injured and have been rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.
According to police reports, the incident occurred in Butyamba Village, located in the Butyamba IDP area of Kikuube Town Council. Banura was allegedly knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace vehicle in what authorities have described as a hit-and-run crash.
He was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Police say the driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the crash. However, the motor vehicle has since been recovered and impounded as investigations intensify.
Authorities have launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the driver to assist with ongoing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The death of Banura has sent shockwaves across Kikuube District and beyond, with leaders and residents mourning the loss of a prominent local figure.
Police have urged members of the public with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to come forward, as efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice continue.
