Kayunga NUP Leader, Family Killed in Road Crash

Date:

Supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and residents of Kayunga District are grieving the sudden and tragic deaths of Councillor Peter Lukwago, his wife Dorah Nawagi, and their seven-year-old child, who perished in a road accident along the Mukono–Kayunga Highway on Monday.

Lukwago, the elected representative of Nsotoka Parish in Kayunga Sub-county, died instantly along with his wife and child after a speeding Toyota Wish (registration UBC 311B) lost control and crashed into their motorcycle at Namaliiri.

Another boda boda rider, who was traveling alongside the family, also died at the scene. A child passenger on his motorcycle survived the crash but sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital.

Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle was moving at high speed when one of its tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control and veer into the path of the motorcycles, resulting in the fatal collision.

A traffic officer at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, cited reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance—particularly worn-out tyres—as the likely causes of the crash.

Patrick Sserubiri, NUP’s Kayunga District chairperson, remembered Lukwago as a dedicated party member and passionate advocate for change in Uganda.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents calling on the government to urgently address road safety concerns and improve the condition of the Mukono–Kayunga Highway, which has been the site of numerous deadly accidents.

By the time of reporting, the bodies of the deceased had been transferred to the Kayunga Hospital mortuary for postmortem, as burial arrangements got underway Monday evening.
