Katikkiro Mayiga Urges Buganda Voters to Choose Local Leaders Who Understand Their Needs

Date:

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has advised the people of Buganda to be cautious when voting for non-Baganda candidates contesting in the region.

He emphasized the importance of choosing leaders who understand and prioritize the needs and development of Buganda.

Katikkiro Mayiga made this appeal recently while meeting with a delegation of National Resistance Movement (NRM) members from Buikwe and Buvuma districts, led by Harriet Nankabirwa Kimyanso, at Bulange Mengo recently.

The NRM group had gone to Mengo to share the challenges they have faced within their party structures, especially concerning unfairness and limited opportunities for local members during internal processes.

A source from Mengo confirmed that Katikkiro welcomed the NRM delegation warmly, and encouraged them to support leaders from within the Buganda region who are committed to serving the people and promoting Buganda’s interests.

The Katikkiro reportedly expressed concern over some opposition parties who, according to him, have “planted” non-Baganda candidates in Buganda constituencies.

He warned that some of these candidates have openly declared intentions that are not supportive of Buganda, and instead aim to weaken the region.

“What is wrong with Mengo supporting the ruling government?” Katikkiro Mayiga asked. “How can a well-established region like Buganda abandon the government and follow a group of people whose intentions are unknown?”

He also reportedly criticized Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, a National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate in Nakawa East, accusing him of making threats against Mengo on social media and questioning his credibility.

“If a person is not trusted in his own region, why should Baganda trust him to represent them in Parliament?” Katikkiro Mayiga asked.

Kabaka Mutebi under Fire: NUP’s Mufumbiro Threatens to Dismantle Buganda Kingdom if NUP Takes Power

Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro recently warned that if the National Unity Platform (NUP) comes to power, they will dismantle the Buganda Kingdom, directly threatening Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi’s leadership.

While emphasizing that Buganda is a region that welcomes everyone, he clarified that this openness should not be abused.

“In Buganda, we welcome everyone,” he said, “but that should not mean we allow others to take advantage of us or deny us our fair share.”

After his remarks, the NRM group reiterated that they have been facing internal frustrations, particularly with how opportunities are shared within the party.

The Katikkiro advised the group to address their concerns within the party structures and not to air internal matters in the media. He also encouraged voters in Buganda to elect leaders who are committed to truthful, fair, and people-centered leadership.

The overall message from Mengo was clear: political unity, fairness, and local empowerment are essential for the region’s continued growth and stability.
