Katikkiro Mayiga meets Mpuuga, blesses Democratic Front

Date:

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has urged the newly formed Democratic Front (DF), led by former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, to focus its political message on issues that directly affect ordinary citizens as the country heads toward the 2026 elections.

Mayiga met with Mpuuga and other leaders of the DF at Bulange Mengo, where the group outlined their political goals and the positions they hope to win in the coming polls.

The DF is one of several emerging opposition parties seeking to challenge the dominance of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), which has been in power since 1986.

After the closed-door meeting, Mayiga said the kingdom expects any political group operating in Buganda to reflect the kingdom’s priorities. He asked the DF to use Buganda’s five key issues as the foundation of their campaign messaging.

Mayiga said Ugandans deserve to know where the Democratic Front stands on the rule of law, transparency in government, and essential social services.

“Uganda needs leadership that respects the law. We also need a government that operates transparently and provides proper plans for health, education, and the fight against poverty,” he said.

Mayiga called for calm and urged all political actors to prioritise peace ahead of the elections.

“I repeat my appeal for everyone to work for a peaceful vote,” he said.

Mpuuga said DF will be a different political organisation.

“DF is not a rumour, it is an officially registered political party. It is a collection of Ugandans who believe that the country is not moving in the right direction. We believe in taking action to solve governance problems in Uganda,” Mpuuga said.

Buganda has historically played a significant role in shaping political debates in Uganda since the 19th century, when missionaries first set foot in the kingdom.
