Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom, has praised Rotarians for their competence-based leadership, which has delivered impactful results despite limited resources.
Speaking to Bbeg Media at Bulange Mengo while receiving a delegation of Rotary District 9213, led by their new governor, Geofrey Martin Kitakule, Mayiga highlighted the Rotarians’ ability to select qualified leaders who prioritize service above self-interest.
“I would love to implore comrades for your better selection of leaders that enables you to implement your tasks and improve the conditions of our people. We look forward as a kingdom to work together because of our shared vision and values,” Mayiga stated.
As a Paul Harris Fellow, Mayiga urged leaders to think critically before speaking, focusing on addressing societal challenges such as providing clean water, alleviating poverty, empowering youth, supporting vulnerable children with free or subsidized education, and extending healthcare to marginalized communities.
He emphasized that the Rotarians’ leadership model should be emulated by others in society.
Governor Geofrey Martin Kitakule requested Mengo’s support in leveraging communication tools to effectively promote Rotary’s services and reach wider audiences.
He also outlined efforts to decentralize Rotary’s operations to rural communities, dispelling the notion that Rotary is exclusively for elites.
Kitakule reaffirmed Rotary’s commitment to environmental conservation, including protecting the Kibira kya Kabaka to preserve Buganda’s cultural heritage and conserving the Lake Victoria Nile Basin.
He announced plans to establish a centre of excellence health facility in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom and to deploy a floating ambulance to serve marginalized island communities on Lake Victoria.
The event was attended by the 2nd Deputy Katikkiro and Kingdom Treasurer Waggwa Nsibirwa, Agriculture Minister Amis Kakomo, and Buganda Lukiiko member Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule.
The partnership between Buganda Kingdom and Rotary, now nearing five years, continues to strengthen through shared goals and initiatives.
