RUBANDA-Police in Rubanda District are investigating a tragic case of suicide involving a 22-year-old university student who was found dead in his home in Bubare Town Council.
The deceased, identified as Mugarura Victor, a first-year student at Kabale University and resident of Hamurara Cell, Nyamiyaga Ward, allegedly took his own life by hanging himself with a rope on July 24, 2025, at an unknown time.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident came to light in the evening when Victor’s family had been searching for him after he disappeared earlier in the day with his mother’s mobile phone.
His sister, attempting to reach him, dialed the number and heard it ringing from within his room.
Upon opening the door, she was met with the devastating sight of Victor’s lifeless body hanging above his bed.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, stating that officers were promptly notified and responded to the scene.
The area was examined and documented, with statements recorded from relevant witnesses.
A rope used in the alleged suicide was recovered, along with what appeared to be suicide notes found beside the body suspected to have been written by Victor before his death.
Maate expressed deep sorrow over the incident and issued a strong appeal to the public:
“Whenever individuals are facing challenges or are in distress, we urge them to seek help from local leaders, family, or appropriate offices.
Ending one’s life is not a solution and leaves behind deep pain for those who care about you.”Police have launched an inquiry into the matter to establish the full circumstances surrounding Victor’s death.
The community has been left in shock by the loss of the young student, remembered by peers as quiet and reserved.
Mental health experts continue to emphasize the importance of open communication and support networks, especially among youth facing emotional and psychological challenges.
