Government has re-opened border crossings between Uganda and DRC in M23 controlled areas of Bunagana and Ishasha.

This was confirmed by Col. Chris Magezi, the Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Forces UPDF, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba today, Friday, July 11, 2025.

Magezi says it was a criminal and counterproductive move to block meaningful trade between neighbouring communities whose survival and prosperity depends on it.

“Those who did it are being investigated,” says Magezi adding that the re-opening follows a Presidential directive through the CDF-UPDF to reopen the border crossings.

The M23 rebels have effectively curved out a quasi-state in Northern Kivu, collecting taxes said to be to the tune of 1M dollars per month from cross border trade and minerals.
