Isaac Rukanda Declares Bid for NRM Western Vice Chair, Rattles Party Veterans

Date:

Isaac Rukanda Akampurira has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of NRM Vice Chairman for Western Uganda, sending shockwaves through the political establishment and igniting widespread youth support across the country.

On Monday, Isaac picked up his nomination forms at the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters, a move he described as a bold step toward reviving internal democracy, grassroots participation, and the empowerment of the party’s mobilizers.

“This step is not just about politics,” Isaac stated in his declaration. “It’s about continuing the struggle I have passionately led for years — advocating for internal democracy, active grassroots participation, and ensuring our mobilizers are not left behind. The time has come for fresh, committed leadership that reflects the voice and aspirations of our generation.”

His candidacy has quickly gained momentum, especially among the youth, who see Isaac as a beacon of hope and reform within the party. His entry into the race has reportedly unsettled some of the long-standing party heavyweights, who now face a rising tide of popular support rallying behind the youthful contender.

Isaac has long been an outspoken advocate for reform within the ruling party. In November 2024, he called on the NRM leadership to hold internal elections — something that had not taken place since 2016, in clear contradiction to the party’s own constitution. His demand for democratic processes within the party earned him praise from both members and observers who have called for greater transparency in NRM operations.

In a notable show of unity, Isaac also penned a letter to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni advising against expelling members who chose to contest as independents, urging for inclusivity and dialogue rather than punishment.

Beyond politics, Isaac has demonstrated a strong commitment to social causes, particularly in youth empowerment. He has led several campaigns raising awareness on the dangers of drug abuse, HIV, alcoholism, and early pregnancies. In addition, he has launched initiatives aimed at eradicating poverty and equipping Ugandans with skills for self-reliance.

With the 2025 NRM internal elections approaching, Isaac Rukanda Akampurira’s candidacy presents a new face of leadership one grounded in activism, reform, and grassroots mobilization. As the campaign trail heats up, all eyes will be on the Western region to see whether this young reformist can redefine the future of Uganda’s dominant political party.
