Isaac Musumba, a seasoned politician, has contested the results of the NRM primaries for Buzaya County, Kamuli, attributing his defeat to irregularities by the NRM Electoral Commission (EC) returning officer.
Musumba, who served as Minister of State for Regional Cooperation, claimed the returning officer declared the results “upside down,” leading to the loss despite his campaign efforts.
“We voted although the returning officer declared our results upside down and got unexpected results at the expense of our efforts we put in hence contributing to our loss in the primaries,” Musumba remarked.
He said Paul Kintu Bamusibule, a business security analyst based in Wellington, New Zealand, was declared the winner with fewer than 2,000 votes, a figure Musumba disputes based on his campaign’s information.
Yesterday, Musumba raised these grievances at the NRM EC offices pointing to widespread issues in the primaries, including violence and electoral malpractices.
This marks Musumba’s second consecutive primary loss, having been defeated by Muzaale in the 2020 NRM primaries. He ran as an independent in the 2021 general election but lost again.
The 2025 NRM primaries in Buzaya County were notably contentious, with reports of violence, including the fatal shooting of Sowed Egumya, a Musumba supporter, by police on the eve of the polls.
This incident occurred amid allegations of machete-wielding groups attacking the home of incumbent MP Martin Muzaale, who was also defeated by Bamusibule in the primaries.
