Following violent incidents linked to internal party disputes, the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has summoned political leaders and aspirants in Sembabule District to a crucial security meeting aimed at addressing escalating tensions and restoring order.
The move comes after deadly clashes erupted in Lwemiyaga County during National Resistance Movement (NRM) party activities, where security forces reportedly used live ammunition on rival supporters, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The confrontation involved backers of prominent political figures vying for influence ahead of the 2026 elections.

Although local police downplayed the IGP’s visit as routine, many observers believe the meeting is a direct response to growing unrest, perceived misuse of force, and declining public confidence in the neutrality of security institutions during intra-party processes.
The Sembabule region, notorious for its fierce political rivalries, has repeatedly witnessed violence during election cycles, highlighting ongoing challenges in managing internal party democracy. Byakagaba is expected to use the gathering to urge restraint, reaffirm police authority, and clarify the military’s role in civilian political matters.
As scrutiny mounts and demands for accountability grow louder, the police leadership faces mounting pressure to act firmly against abuse of power and ensure the safety and fairness of the political environment ahead of the 2026 polls
