The Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Iganga district, Ronald Mwase, has been arrested for orchestrating electoral-related violence. Mwase was arrested on Tuesday alongside Sharif Bogere, Ronald Mumbya and Basisi Zaribu.
The suspects are currently detained at Iganga central police station. It is alleged that, on Tuesday, Mwase, a supporter of the incumbent Iganga District Woman MP, Sauda Alibawo, staged illegal roadblocks in Iganga town and physically assaulted supporters of her rival, Mariam Seif.
The Busoga East Police Spokesperson, Michael Kafayo, says that Mwase’s team stole money and other valuables in the possession of their opponents. Kafayo says that this scuffle lasted for over three hours from 6:00-9:00 PM, attracting police intervention. Mwase and his team then proceeded to Seif’s camp at Buseyi, along the Iganga-Busia road, resulting in a heated confrontation between both parties.
Kafayo says that, to avert the escalation of violence, police retaliated by arresting Mwase. He says that the suspects are facing four counts of violence, causing grievous harm, malicious damage, and theft of property.
He also notes that they impounded a music system and three vehicles belonging to Alibawo’s camp.
They include a FUSO truck registration number UAX 968J, a drone UBF 800K, and a Noah with registration number UAY 559F. The National Resistance Movement- NRM party will hold its primaries on Thursday.
