Ibanda NRM Youth Leaders Arrested Over Shs 54 Million Embezzlement Scandal

Date:

Three officials from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Youth Executive Committee in Ibanda District have been arrested for allegedly misappropriating Shs 54 million meant for youth development at the village level.

The arrested individuals — Marvin Mubangyizi (the district NRM Youth Chairperson), Edwin Kalema, and Nelson Akampa—were taken into custody on Sunday evening after complaints from local youth revealed that the funds had not reached the intended beneficiaries.

The money, dispatched by the NRM Central Executive Committee, was earmarked to support youth activities across all 606 villages in the district, with each village expected to receive Shs 90,000.

Local officials expressed outrage over the suspected embezzlement. Innocent Atuhe, the district NRM vice chairperson, stated during an emergency meeting that a few individuals had diverted the entire sum, undermining efforts to empower youth at the grassroots.

Ibanda’s Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Banjo Richard, confirmed the arrests and issued a stern warning that the accused must repay the funds within a week or face legal action.

The incident has sparked anger and disappointment among young people in the district, who had anticipated using the funds to support community mobilization and development activities.

Authorities say investigations are underway and have vowed to hold all those responsible accountable.
