KAMPALA, Uganda – Taxpayers can now use an updated MTN MoMo shortcode to settle government obligations following an expansion of digital services by MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited and the Uganda Revenue Authority.

The enhanced system, launched Monday at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, allows users to navigate tax payments through a dedicated menu. Here is how to use the service:

To pay URA taxes and other government fees, MTN customers can dial * 165 *18# from their mobile phones. This shortcode provides direct access to URA services, allowing individuals and businesses to complete transactions without visiting a bank or a tax office.

The nationwide rollout aims to reduce physical queues and simplify the compliance process. Richard Yego, managing director of MTN MoMo, said the enhancement makes it easier for users to meet their obligations anytime and from any location.

John Musinguzi Rujoki, commissioner general of the URA, said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to digitize tax administration. By bringing services to the mobile phone, the URA hopes to encourage voluntary compliance through improved transparency and efficiency.

MTN MoMo currently serves more than 13.6 million customers in Uganda. The company is a subsidiary of MTN Uganda Limited and provides various financial services, including utility payments and money transfers.
