KISORO-Police in Kisoro District are investigating circumstances under which Hon. John Kamara Nzeyimana, a Member of Parliament, allegedly aided the escape of seven suspects who had been arrested over charges of arson and malicious damage to property.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred on Sunday, July 28, 2025, at around 2:00 PM at Kisoro Central Police Station (CPS).
The suspects, identified as, Gasigwa Jeremiah,Harerimana Augustine,Nkurunziza Apollo, Bavuzayubusa Paskazia, Mujawimana Dinavance, Basekuye Teleza and Hon. John Kamara Nzeyimana (for aiding the suspects’ escape) were earlier implicated in a May 3, 2025 incident involving the burning and destruction of property belonging to one Mahoro Jackline, stemming from a village dispute.
Mahoro promptly filed a case at Kisoro CPS, which has been under active investigation since.
Maate revealed that the suspects had been summoned to CPS for interviews and to record statements, but instead turned to Hon. Kamara, who allegedly advised them to ignore the police summons.Despite their earlier defiance, the suspects were eventually arrested and brought to CPS Kisoro on Sunday.
Shortly after their arrival, Hon. Kamara appeared at the station and requested that the suspects be granted police bond.District CID Officer D/ASP Babiiha Johnson reportedly advised Hon. Kamara that the suspects would first have to record statements due to the public interest in the case.
The MP allegedly left the station angrily, cursing and expressing dissatisfaction with the procedure.Shockingly, as the investigating officer began to interact with the suspects, Hon. Kamara returned, instructed the suspects to flee, and drove them away in his personal vehicle.
Attempts by the officer to intervene were reportedly thwarted when he was physically pushed away.
The matter was immediately reported to OC Station SP Tuhairwe Alex and the district CID officer. A swift police operation was launched, and the suspects were later re-arrested from Hon. Kamara’s residence.
However, police say they could not arrest Hon. Kamara himself, as he had mobilized members of the local community against the arresting officers.ASP Maate expressed deep concern over the legislator’s conduct:
“Imagine a person of his caliber a lawmaker being the very one undermining the laws he helped enact.
Let him be reminded that no one is above the law.”Police investigations are ongoing, and efforts to arrest Hon. John Kamara Nzeyimana are underway.
