A harrowing case of domestic violence and suspected financial dispute has left a 16-year-old girl, Bridget Akello, fighting for her life at Kiruddu Hospital after suffering severe burns in a house fire allegedly set by her aunt.
The shocking incident occurred in Kyondo Village, Kapeeka Sub-county, Nakaseke District, where Celina Nalukwago, now in police custody, has been charged with attempted murder. The circumstances leading up to the attack, however, paint a broader picture of family tensions, economic struggles, and possible gender-based violence.
Initial police reports suggest that Nalukwago attacked Akello over missing money amounting to Shs400,000. However, multiple sources in the community have provided conflicting accounts of what may have driven the horrific act.
According to some residents, Nalukwago suspected her husband of favoring Akello in ways that sparked jealousy and rage. Others claim that financial hardship played a role, as the suspect, who typically provided food, returned home to find her husband had given the girl money for household necessities.
Mr. Moses Ssenfuma, the Kapeeka Sub-county chairperson, confirmed that Akello’s mother is currently working in Saudi Arabia and had left her daughter in the care of her sister, Nalukwago. This, he suggests, may have contributed to underlying tensions.
Ms. Safina Nantege, a neighbor, alleged that Nalukwago purchased paraffin before dousing the girl’s dress and locking her in a room before setting it on fire.
“The young girl pleaded for mercy, but Nalukwago refused to open the door. It was the neighbors who rushed to break it open and save her,” Nantege said.
Reports further indicate that Nalukwago resisted efforts to get medical help for the girl, claiming she was a thief. It was only after police intervened—potentially saving Nalukwago from a lynch mob—that Akello was rushed to the hospital.
Authorities are now calling for a thorough investigation into the case to ensure justice for Akello. Child welfare activists have also urged the government to strengthen interventions aimed at protecting vulnerable children, particularly those left under the care of guardians who may not always have their best interests at heart.
