Rising Ugandan musician Happy Fan has shared details about his journey into the music industry, revealing how the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 marked the beginning of his professional music career.
Happy Fan says music initially started as a passion during the lockdown, but over time, he discovered his ability to create original music and develop a unique style that inspires others. What began as a hobby soon transformed into a serious artistic pursuit fueled by creativity and self-belief.
A major turning point in his career came after meeting award-winning artist Eddy Kenzo, whom he describes as kind, humble, and encouraging. He revealed that he asked Kenzo how he managed to win and bring the BET Award to Uganda. In response, the Big Talent boss advised him to remain focused, listen carefully to his favorite music genres, Afrobeat and world music, and concentrate on creating lyrical, meaningful songs.
Musically, Happy Fan primarily works within Afrobeat and world music styles. He draws inspiration from both legendary and contemporary artists, including the late Fela Kuti, Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and Eddy Kenzo. He credits these musicians with shaping his sound and influencing his creative direction.
Happy Fan says the song Sitya Loss by Eddy Kenzo played a significant role in helping him understand the importance of building a strong musical identity. The track inspired him to incorporate music, dance, and traditional drumming into his work. He also cites Wizkid’s Made in Lagos and Burna Boy’s African Giant as albums that broadened his perspective and motivated him to target the international music market.
In addition, Happy Fan points to “Blow My Mind” by Chris Brown featuring Davido as a collaboration that helped him appreciate the power of musical partnerships in expanding his audience across different regions.
Beyond music, Happy Fan is also a businessman and currently works as a brand ambassador for Kagodo Motors Car Company, balancing his entrepreneurial endeavors with his growing music career.
As he continues to evolve as an artist, Happy Fan remains focused on refining his sound, building a strong personal brand, and positioning himself for success on the global music stage.
