Government has today Wednesday, 9th April, 2025 launched a tree planting initiative at Mulago National Referral Hospital, aiming to improve patient well-being and promote environmental sustainability within the hospital grounds.
The campaign was officially launched by the State Minister for Environment, Hon. Beatrice Atim Odwong Anywar (Mama Mabira), who was represented by the Ag. Director for Plantations Development at National Forestry Authority, Mr. Mwodi.
The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority.
The Minister emphasized the importance of tree planting saying, “We must continue to act. Time for discussions is over the time for action is now. Let today’s tree planting exercise serve as a reminder to us that the environment is our shared responsibility & that it is within our power to make a difference.”
“Let us plant not only trees, but a brighter future for Uganda — a future where health and the environment go hand in hand, where sustainable practices lead to a better quality of life for all,” she added.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Kerege preached the importance of integrating nature into healthcare spaces. “This project is not just about planting trees it’s about creating a healing environment for patients, provide shade & enhance nutrition through the planting of fruit trees”
The initiative targets planting of 400 trees, a mix of shade & fruit-bearing species, across hospital premises. The trees are expected to offer relief from scorching sun for patients & visitors, while fruit trees will contribute to nutrition, particularly for long stay patients.
KCCA officials welcomed the collaboration, noting that the initiative aligns with the authority’s broader urban greening strategy to make Kampala a cleaner, healthier, and more livable city.
Mulago Hospital officials have hailed the effort as a model for integrating green infrastructure into public institutions. The project is set to roll out in phases, with further expansions planned across other health facilities in the capital.
