Maj Gen Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, the minister for Security, was yesterday nominated for the position of chairperson of the Veterans League on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC).
Dressed in an NRM party T-shirt and visibly enthusiastic, Muhwezi appealed for the full support of party veterans to continue advocating for their welfare and improving their livelihoods, acknowledging their sacrifices in liberating the country.
“I call upon all veterans to support me in consolidating our hard-won achievements,” Muhwezi stated.
Muhwezi pledged to enhance veterans’ access to financial credit, highlighting his role in establishing the Veterans Bank, which he said was made possible with support from President Museveni.
He explained that the bank aims to provide veterans nationwide with low-interest loans to improve their livelihoods.
Muhwezi emphasized his track record in advocating for veterans, noting that the veterans’ docket was merged with the Ministry of Defence and Security due to his efforts to streamline their issues.
He urged veterans to back his candidacy, asserting that he is the best candidate to champion their cause, as he did during the struggle against the oppressive Obote regime.
Muhwezi’s nomination comes at a critical time when many veterans accuse the government of neglecting them.
Despite their sacrifices, numerous veterans continue to face extreme poverty, struggling to afford quality education for their children, decent housing, and adequate medical services—the very issues they fought to address during the liberation struggle.
